Stylish, Sustainable Travel Outfits as Comfy as Pajamas

Packing for a spa retreat  or resort is surprisingly tricky. You want ease and comfort, but also versatility, for one moment you may be on a meditation pillow, the next, at dinner in a sleek dining room with fancy food. You want to look chic and pulled together without dragging half your closet across the country. Meg Kinney, designer and founder of the cult-favorite label Meg, with boutiques in New York and Toronto, figured it out (hallelujah!), creating a line called Movement that fits all our travel/comfort/lounging/style-loving desires.

When Meg first started tinkering with the fabric that would become her Movement collection, this was her thinking: There has got to be something between yoga pants and an outfit you labor over. “We need a way of dressing that is as comfortable as PJs but makes you feel and look like you have interesting, fashionable clothing on,” she says. “And that requires little thought (AKA stress).”

Made from a drapey, stretchy jersey knit, the pieces—monochrome tops, wide-legged pants, harem pants, jumpsuits, skirts, and more—have the easy, unfussy-ness you want at a resort or spa, while exploring a new city, or just dashing around in your own hood. They’re soft. They move with you. And they look fabulous. Even better, they bounce back into crease-free shape after you roll them into a ball and toss them into your suitcase for a long haul. “You can put them on at 6 AM and wear them until midnight,” says Meg, “and never once think about them again—which is basically my dream outfit.”

In fact, this design MO goes for Meg’s full collection of low-maintenance, high-style clothes: reversible tops, button-downs you can wear multiple ways, and dresses that drape perfectly and can be switched up with a simple belt. “My whole idea is to let the clothes do the heavy lifting,” says Meg. “They should be unique enough that you don’t need to pile on accessories, flattering, and comfortable—goes without saying. And most important, they should never make you second guess your outfit. Basically, clothes that don’t ask anything of you except to enjoy your day.”

Good for the Planet, Better for Your Wardrobe

Of course, sustainability is a must, and Meg’s take is practical. She manufactures locally and uses reclaimed materials. And when a piece stops working for you, Meg’s ingenious Archive Program kicks in. Customers can recycle their old Meg clothes for 15% off a new item. The returned pieces are resold, with a portion of sales donated to Planned Parenthood. “Everybody wins,” says Meg. “Remember too, you can be sustainable easily by buying well. High-quality clothes mean you buy fewer. Pieces that work well for your body type and are easy to care for will get tons of wear, so you’re not constantly filling your closet.”

Meg’s Packing Playbook

Her own tried-and-true strategy makes travel-dressing so much easier:

Movement is wrinkle-free and packs super tiny,” she says. “And the pieces all mix and match with each other, so you don’t even need to compose outfits.  That’s what I bring to a destination spa and resort, for sure.”

And for more urban and exploratory trips? “I like to build a mental look book. I envision myself at the flea market, wandering the streets, at dinner, walking on the beach, having breakfast at the hotel… Then, I make sure each piece can cover at least a couple of those events, and ideally more. If it can’t multitask, it stays home.”

“Then, bring a cozy scarf, a cool sweatshirt, and a non-wrinkle jacket. Those three will get you through any imperfect weather. And include a good statement earring. You’ll be so thankful when it elevates a super simple outfit when you find yourself somewhere snazzier than planned.”
